And then she is, in effect, drafted into a presidential run. ![]() Though she longs to retire and race around the galaxy with Han - they share a bed only once in this book - her sense of duty keeps calling her back. It is set six years before the Force Awakens, and finds Leia serving out her time in the Galactic Senate. Princess Leia struggles to keep the New Republic together and discover the truth about a mysterious external threat - but the most damaging revelation of her life is about to be made.īloodline lives up to this promise, in the sense that it cannot avoid becoming a commentary on modern politics. Given the cantankerous, topsy-turvy, no-holds-barred nature of the 2016 election campaign, this poster seemed to crystalize the spirit of the times in so many ways. Much of that anticipation was stoked by Del Rey, which sent out what I have to say is the coolest book teaser I've ever seen: an election poster for Leia, with a Darth Vader helmet and the word "LIAR" spray-painted over it. Written by Claudia Gray, a YA author who previously gave us Lost Stars, the book was released last week after much anticipation. "You know better than that," Princess Leia chides an officer who suggests communicating with the Republic about the situation on Jakku - shortly before what we presume to be the Republic's capital in the Hosnian system is destroyed by Starkiller base.Ĭlearly, there was a heck of a backstory about Leia's life in the New Republic waiting to be told.Īnd that, at long last, is what we now have with Bloodline, the first utterly indispensable pre- Force Awakens novel. It's 'Slayer Leia' nowĮven a deleted scene with Leia on the Force Awakens Blu-Ray served only to heighten the question of what the heck is going on with her, and her galaxy.
